16
Q

Wet mass

A

Includes all mass in an organism including the water in its body. (Highly variable)

17
Q

Dry mass

A

Mass of an organism which does not have any water present

3 things for growth in plants

A

Cell division
Cell elongation
Differentiate

19
Q

Cell division

20
Q

Cell elongation

A

Takes place in plant cells only where the plant expands making the cell bigger. (Zones of elongation)

21
Q

Differentiate

A

(Zone of differentiation) Stem Cells in Animals, in plants they are meristem.

22
Q

Transport in a plant done by

A

Xylem

Phloem

23
Q

Xylem transports

24
Q

Phloem transports

25
Meristem
Found just beneath the tips of the roots where cells continually keep dividing. Once the cells have divided they become longer through cell elongation. As the plant grows older meristem begin to become specialised Cells - they differentiate.

Cell division | Differentiate
27
The nervous system
The network of nerve cells and fibres which transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body.
28
5 senses
``` Sight Smell Taste Sound Touch ```
29
Parts of the nervous system
Peripheral nervous system | Central nervous system
30
Central nervous systems (CNS) comprised of...
Brain | Spinal chord
31
Peripheral nervous system (PNS) is comprised of...
Motor neurones Sensory neurones Relay neurone
32
Order of the reflex arc
``` Stimulus Receptor Sensory neurone Synapse Relay Synapse Motor neurone Effector Response ```
33
Embryonic stem cells
Pro: Pluripotent, Easily sourced, easy to remove, can be cloned to avoid rejection Con: Ethics, illegal in many countries, could lead to illegal human cloning.
34
Adult stem cells
Pros: No ethical issues, would avoid rejection if from patient Cons: Difficult to identify and remove, multi-potent
35
Pluripotent
Capable of becoming many different cell types
36
Multi-potent
Can only become some types of cells
