CC1a States of Matter Flashcards
Characteristics of a solid
Very packed together
Regular pattern
Particles vibrate about fixed positions
Fixed shape and volume
Characteristics of a liquid
Particles have small spaces between them giving a random shape
Particles move around each other
Characteristics of gases
Gas particles are spread
Random arrangement
Move fast in all directions

What is a solid?
Something with a fixed shape and volume
What is a liquid?
Something with a fixed volume but no fixed shape
What is a gas?
Something that does not have a fixed shape or volume, easy to squash
What is a melting point?
The temperature at which a substance changes from the solid state to liquid state when heated
What is the boiling point?
The temperature at which a liquid boils
What is the freezing point?
The temperature at which a substance stats to turn from a liquid into a solid
What is the condensing point?
The temperature at which a gas turns into a liquid
What are state changes?
They are physical changes, the chemical properties of the substance do not change. This is because the particles themselves do not change - only their arrangement, movement and amount of stored energy
