CBT schizophrenia Flashcards
A01 - CBT
who is psychologist and what did he do?
what did he notice?
what was aim of cbt?
what are two types of coping strategies?
Tarrier devised a specific form of CBT for schizophrenia known as coping strategy enhancement.
noticed that patients were able to identify triggers for schizophrenic episodes and had devised their own coping strategies. examples of triggers would be like:
1. certain people
2. being own their own
3. being put understress.
aim: develope and apply coping strategies for psychotic symptoms and accompanying stress they produce.
cognitive strategies: such as distraction, concentrate on specific tasks.
behavioural : relaxation techniques, social withdrawal/increasing social contract, loud music and behavioural experiments.
two parts of therapy:
1. develope a rapport with patients and identify triggers of psychotic syptoms as well as reviewing existing and developing new coping strategies
- target specific symptoms
- they also have hw to consildate their learning of strategies between sessions.
- overall aim is two effective strategy for each depressing symptom.
evaluation for cbt
- strength
- negative
- strength
effectivness:
sameer jauhar et al 2014 reviewed the results of 34 studies using cbt for schizophrenia and concluded that cbt has significant but fairly small effect on both positive and negative symptoms.
improve quality of life but do not cure.
cbt allows a person making sense and some case challenge their symptom. this all worth doing but it doesnt cure schizophrenia. failure to cure it shows a weakness of psychological treatments
chadwick 1992 worked with schizophrenic who had a delusion thinking that his thinking could influence the future. however he fail to predict what would happen in 50 video clips shown to him this provided him with evidence to show that his delusions were false.
