Q

tell me about psychoeducation - educating the client about their disorder

A

this includes helping the client to understand that their hallucinations are a result of malfunctioning metacognition and the voice may be an inner dialogue rather than an external stimulus

16
Q

why is helping the patient o identify irrational thoughts and reality test them a good idea

A

by discussing how likely it is that the beliefs are true, the therapist and the client can find alternative and less threatening possibilities

17
Q

how does CBT help

A

it helps patients to make sense of their delusions and hallucinations and how it impacts their behaviour and where the symptoms come fom

18
Q

what ca the greater understanding of their delusions and hallucinations do

A

helps reduce fear and anxiety in the patient

19
Q

what is the aim of CBT

A

not to eliminate symptoms but to help individuals cope with their experiences, reduce distress and improve their ability to function

20
Q

what are the evaluation points of CBT as a therapy for schizophrenia

A

evidence for effectiveness -Jauhar et al
can be combined with drug therapy
relies on the client being an active participant
reality testing might not work

21
Q

explain the explanation of evidence for effectiveness by Jauhar et al as an explanation for CBT as a therapy for schizophrenia

A

they reviewed the results of 34 studies of CBT for schizophrenia
They conducted that CBT has significantly but fairly small effect on both positive and negative symptoms

22
Q

explain the explanation of CBT being combined with drug therapy as an explanation for CBT as a therapy for schizophrenia

A

Tarrier et al compared 315 patients who were randomly allocated to different groups.
a combination of mediation and counselling or medication only
patients in the combination group showed fewer symptoms than only using the medication only group. this supports the usefulness of CBT in treating schizophrenia as part of a combined therapy

23
Q

explain the explanation of reality testing not working as an explanation for CBT as a therapy for schizophrenia

A

delusions are a key characteristic of symptoms and they can be very resistant to logic. if a client has paranoid delusions then challenging these delusions make make the client mistrust the therapist.
they might think the therapist is conspiring with the people that are trying to hurt them and they therefore run the risk of the client not trusting them

24
Q

explain the evaluation point how CBT relies on being an active part of the therapy as an explanation for CBT as a therapy for schizophrenia

A

people experiencing negative symptoms of schizophrenia such as avolition may lack the motivation, may lack the motivation needed to do this. in some cases treatment with drugs is needed to relieve symptoms enough to allow the individual to engage with CBT
