CBT overview Flashcards
Who first developed the Cognitive theory for depression?
Aaron T. Beck
Stress-diathesis hypothesis
pathology results when pathological schemas are activated by stressors (stress can lead to the pathological schemas)
Effectiveness
equally effective as pharmacotherapy; more support than for any other psychosocial therapy; better protection from relapse than pharmacotherapy
Nomothetic and Idiographic
nomothetic- discovery of principles with GROUP
idiographic- discovery of principles with INDIVIDUALS
Cognitive Triad
patient’s view of self, world, and future
Schema
deep cognitive structure that assists us in interpreting our experience
- can be protective (keeping from danger, but when “world is always dangerous” can be the start of an anxiety disorder)
examples: “im not as good as other people” “i will fail no matter how hard i try”
Varieties of CBT
Cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, behavioral activation, rational emotive behavior therapy, dbt, midnfulness, acceptance
Elements of CT (based on Schemas)
- symptoms are emotions, behaviors and automatic thoughts
- schema activation triggers AT, behaviors, and emotions
- pathological schemas underlie symptoms
- schemas distort thinking outside of awareness
- schema change requires schema activation (making it conscious)
Symptom Changes
- changes in any behavior, AT, or emotions are expected to produce change in the others
- dont treat the disorder, treat the systems!
