Explain the principle of CBT.
CBT combines the way we think (cognitive) with the things we do (behavioural) because the way we think about situations often impacts the way we feel and behave.
What are the aims of CBT?
- Identify thinking that causes problematic feelings and behaviour.
- Identify unwanted behaviour patterns.
- Plan goals and the step-by-step process to achieve them.
- Question individual’s negative thinking.
What are the steps of CBT?
Problem identification - what is the concern?
Goal selection - what does the patient want to change?
What options are possible for the patient?
Consideration of consequences - what might happen?
Plan of action - what does the patient decide to do?
Implementation - putting the plan into action
Evaluation - was the plan successful?

Depression
