CBT Flashcards
What does the cognitive theory suggest about schizophrenia?
Comes from irrational thoughts or faulty thinking
What does CBT aim to do?
Alter a persons way of thinking and adjust inappropriate beliefs
What does belief modification do?
Teaches strategies to counteract delusional thinking and hallucinations
What does CBT involve?
Draw diagrams to show links between irrational thinking behaviour and emotions
Talking, not dismissing any thoughts to gain an insight as to where the irrational thinking comes from
What do outcome studies measure?
How well a patient does on a treatment compared to the accepted treatment
What do outcome studies of CBT suggest?
Patients have fewer delusions and hallucinations and recover their functioning more than when on antipsychotics
What are the ethical issues with outcome studies?
Schizophrenics are vulnerable so shouldn’t use placebos
Are they in the right state of mind to give informed consent?
Tarrier et al
Found that treatment alleviated positive symptoms however this was only when compare it with no treatment so obviously it will come out as more effective
Drugs or CBT?
Most studies conducted look at the effectiveness of CBT have been on patients taking antipsychotic drugs so you can’t determine which is causing the decrease in schizophrenic symptoms. More research is required
Bradshaw
Looked at the effects of CBT on a schizophrenic woman who had been hospitalised 12 times before from it. She received three years of regular treatment. After having CBT all her symptoms have reduced. She maintains these benefits in a one year follow up study
Pilling et al
Conducted a meta analysis comparing family interventions with CBT. Found that family interventions to reduce relapse rates where is CBT produced positive effect on helping mental state
Combination?
Not a cure
Some studies show how CBT can help the symptoms of schizophrenias but not curate however as it cures the symptoms it makes life easier for them and so is appropriate
Negative symptoms
May be viewed as adaptive safety behaviours to a schizophrenic. For example a negative symptom is effective flattening in a psychiatric hospital schizophrenics may avoid expressing emotion intentionally as they may be put onto antipsychotics if they do and so display negative symptoms as anadaptive mechanism
Compliance with drugs
Research conducted by Turkington found that a combination of therapy and drugs lead to the patient taking the antipsychotic drugs more effectively and so it’s highly appropriate just for this matter
