CBCT Flashcards
What is CBCT?
Cone beam computed tomography
Form of cross-sectional imaging suitable for assessing radio-dense structures
Captures many 2D images and reconstructs them to 3D image
What are benefits of CBCT over plain film?
No superimposition
Ability to view subject from any angle
No magnification/ distortion
Allows for 3D construction
What are downsides of CBCT over plain film?
Increased radiation dose to patient
Not as sharp
Susceptible to artefacts
More exposure to equipment
Requires additional training
What are common uses for CBCT in dentistry?
Clarifying relationship between impacted M3M and IDC prior to intervention - following plain film
Measuring alveolar bone dimensions to help plan implant placement
Assessing large cystic jaw lesions
What are CBCT contraindications?
Plain radiography sufficient
Malignancy
Patient unable to stay still e.g. parkinsons
High-risk debilitating artefacts
