CBC / BMP Flashcards
The basic metabolic panel normally consists of:
-sodium
-potassium
-chloride
- Bicarb/Carbon
-
-
-
What causes hyponatremia?
low sodium
- caused by water retention and/or sodium loss
What are the life threatening values for hyponatremia?
155 mmol/L
What can hypernatremia lead to?
rupture of blood vessels
What is hypokalemia? cause?
low potassium
-diuretics and GI loss are major causes
familial hypokalemic paralysis
What is hyperkalemia? cause?
high potassium
during acute renal failure but can be drug induced by a diuretic
What are the life threatening values of potassium?
6.5 mmol/L
What is hypochloremia?
low chloride
-metabolic acidosis
What is hyperchloremia?
/
What is the purpose of CO2 levels?
approximate the values of HCO3
What happens with CO2 values are decreased?
metabolic acidosis
What happens with CO2 values are increased?
- metabolic alkalosis
- chronic respiratory acidosis
BUN is used for?
/
Creatinine
how well kidneys are functioning in 24 hour operiuod
- evaluate glomerular function
- checked with BUN to differentiate between (slide)
Glucose is used to?
diagnose hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia
