CB4B Darwins theory Flashcards
What is evolution
A gradual change in the inherited traits within a population over time
What is the idea of genetic variation
The characteristics of individuals vary due to difference in genes
What is the idea of environmental change
Conditions in an area change so more competition between organisms
What is the idea natural selection
By chance the variations of some individuals make them better at coping
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
What is the theory of evolution
1) Variation exists within species as a result of mutations in DNA
2) Organisms with characteristics most suited to environment are likely to survive
3) Beneficial characteristics are passed onto next generation
4) Over generations frequency of alleles for advantageous characteristics increase
Why can some bacteria become resistant to anitbiotics
Because bacteria can mutate and produce new strains
What is the development of resistance in bacteria
Random mutation occurs in the genes of an individual bacterial cells
Some mutations protect the bacterial cells from the effect on antibiotic
Bacteria without mutation die or cannot produce when antibiotic is present
