Q

Gamete

A

Sperm and eggs in animals, pollen and egg cells in plants. Contains half of the genetic material.
There are 23 gametes in a chromosome.
Gametes contain half the chromosomes contained in normal diploid cells of the body.

3
Q

Fertilisation

A

A male and female gamete join together and the 2 nuclei fuse. When this happens, the new cell (zygote) has a full set of chromosomes.

(Of a cell in the nucleus) containing 2 complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.

Q

Chromosomes

A

Many genes are folded into a large structure called chromosomes. Or a large structure in the nucleus made of DNA

Q

Bases

A

In DNA there are 4 bases: adenine (A) and guanine (G), then cytosine (C) and thymine (T). In RNA T is replaced with U (uracil)

Q

Double Helix

A

DNA is made of 2 strands, wound around each other to form a double helix (DNA’s shape).

Q

Nucleotide

A

Consists of a sugar (deoxyribose), phosphate and 1 of the 4 bases.
Makes up the backbone of DNA.

16
Q

Hydrogen bonds

A

Holds the 2 complimentary bases together.
G and A have 3 bonds
T and C have 2 bonds

17
Q

Allele

A

A version of a gene

18
Q

Gene

A

A short section of DNA that codes for a specific protein.

19
Q

Dominant

A

An allele that is always expressed

20
Q

Recessive

A

An allele that is not expressed if a dominant is present.

21
Q

Homozygous

A

When 2 copies of the same allele are present

22
Q

Heterozygous

A

When 2 different alleles are present.

23
Q

Phenotype

A

The characteristics that are expressed by those alleles.

24
Q

Genotype

A

The alleles that are present in the genome.

25
Genome
Contains all of the information needed to make that organism. In humans, the genome is all 46 chromosomes in the nucleus.
