CB2 Cell division P1 Flashcards
What are the 3 parts of the cell cycle?
Interphase, mitosis, cytokinesis
What 3 events occur in interphase?
Cell grows, organelles replicate, DNA replicates
What happens during mitosis?
Division of the nucleus to produce 2 genetically identical nuclei.
What happens during cytokinesis?
Cell membrane pinches off to produce 2 identical cells.
What are the 4 descriptions of the cells produced by mitosis?
2, genetically identical, diploid, daughter cells
What is asexual reproduction?
Reproduction involving 1 parent producing identical offspring.
What is sexual reproduction?
Reproduction involving 2 parents producing different offspring.
How many chromosomes are found in a diploid human cell?
46
How many chromosomes are found in a haploid human cell?
23
What causes a cell to become cancerous?
Mutation in DNA.
How do cancerous cells divide?
Uncontrollably.
What are the 4 phases of mitosis (in order)?
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase (Pass Me A Tequila or PMAT)
What 3 processes happen in prophase?
- Spindle fibres form,
- Chromosomes condense so they can be seen,
- The membrane around the nuclues breaks down
What happens in metaphase?
The chromosomes line up at the center of the cell
What 2 processes happen in anaphase?
- The spindle fibres pull the chromosomes apart,
- The chromatids are pulled to opposite ends of the cell
What happens in telophase?
Membranes form around the sets of chromosomes forming 2 new nuclei
