CB1 - Structures in a cell Flashcards
What are both Plant and Animal cells examples of?
They are both eukaryotic cells - which means they contain a nucleus
What features do both plant and animal cells share?
They both contain a cell membrane, ribosomes, a nucleus, cytoplasm and mitochondrion.
What three features does a plant cell contain but a animal cell doesnt?
Plant cell contains a chloroplast, a cell wall and a permanent vacuole.
What is the cytoplasm?
Jelly-like material that contains nutrients and structures called organelles. Also where lots of chemical reactions take place as it contains enzymes. Also contains tiny round structures named ribosomes.
What is the cell membrane?
controls types and amount of substances that enter and leave the cell
What is the nucleus?
Contains genetic material including DNA - which control the cell’s activities.
Where does respiration take place?
Mitochondria, to release energy
What are ribosomes?
they manufacture the protein the cell needs.
What is chloroplast
It is a green substance that contains chlorophyll, it is also where photosynthesis occurs.
What is photosynthesis?
When plant cells make sugar using energy from sunlight.
Cell sap?
a weak solution of sugars and salts.
What helps support the shape of cell?
Vacuole
The cell plants and algae are also surrounded by a strong, rigid __. what?
Cell wall, made of cellulose. The cell wall also helps support the shape of cell.
What is bacteria an example of?
A prokaryotic cell - which means they contain no nucleus
In a bacterial cell, where is the genetic material stored?
Loops of DNA in the cytoplasm, called chromosomal DNA - not the nucleus
