ventral body cavity
from the top of the thoracic cavity to the pelvic cavity
thoratic cavity (chest)
formed by the ribs, muscles of chest, sternum, and thoratic portion or vertebral column
pleural cavity
(within the thoratic cavity) two fluid filled spaces one around each lung
pericardial cavity
(within thoratic) fluid filled space that surrounds the heart
mediastinum
between lungs from sternum to vertebral column and from first rib to the diaphram. contains all thoratic organs except lungs. contains heart, esophagus, trachea, thymus.
abdominopelvic cavity
from the diaphragm to the groin encircled by abdominal muscular wall and bones and muscles of pelvis. divided into 2 cavities
pelvic cavity
inferior portion contains urinary bladder, parts of large intestine, internal organs of reproductive system
abdominal cavity
superior portion contains stomach, spleen, liver, small intestine, and most of large intestine
dorsal body cavity
posterior portion of body, contains vertebral and central nervous system
cranial cavity
hollow space of the head contains head
vertebral cavity
formed by vertebral column contains spinal cord and beginnings of spinal nerves
