Cave + Arch + Stack + Stump Flashcards
How are caves formed (3++)
Weakness in the rock due to a crack or fault
Rock is exploited by hydraulic action and is enlarged
Forms a narrow, steep sided inlet + cliff becomes undercut = cave
How are arches formed (2)
Caves form in headlands as erosion is strongest here
Caves are eroded on either side = arch
How is a stack formed (2+)
The roof of arch is weathered = weathering from the sea-spray splashing
As it is unsupported = roof eventually collapses = stack
How is a stump formed (4)
Stackβs base is in the intertidal zone = subject to erosion
Upper part of stack becomes weathered
Over time the whole stack collapses + leaves behind a stump
Eventually be eroded to the level of the wave-cut platform
