When a country extends its power into other territories for economic or political gain.
Nationalism
A feeling of pride and belongingness towards one’s nation.
Militarism
A political orientation of a people or a government to maintain a strong military force and to be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests.
Alliance system
Competition from Imperialism created rivalries and “friendships.”
“Powder Keg”
Nickname given to South Eastern Europe before World War I.
Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
U-boats that would not warn targets and attacked merchant ships along with Allied warships.
Lusitania
A British passenger ship that was owned by the Cunard Line and was first launched in 1906. Built for the transatlantic passenger trade, it was luxurious and noted for its speed. During World War I the Lusitania was sunk by a German torpedo, resulting in great loss of life.
