Why was appeasement used previously to the outbreak of war?
Horrors of WW1 remembered and so they wished to avoid another war; many politicians felt TOV was too harsh; Britain more concerned about Communism than Nazism; effects of economic depression served as deterrent; appeasement gave Britain another year to prepare for war.

What was the impact of the Treaty of Versailles?
Hitler became determined to destroy TOV; his foreign policy was designed to destroy TOV; to achieve Hitler’s aims he had to rearm, which broke TOV
What was the impact of the Great Depression?
Following WW1, USA adopted policy of isolationism and became more isolationist during GD; encouraged the rise of extremist parties such as the Nazis who promised simple solutions to problems; in Italy and Japan leaders wanted more territory due to effects of GD; Britain and France felt incapable of taking firm action against aggressive nationalism
Why did the League of Nations fail?
Major countries missing; economic sanctions ineffective and unable to control powerful and aggressive nations; seen as a victor’s club; closely associated with TOV; many countries left once challenged by LON; had no army of its own
