Because he was trying to start a rebellion against slavery by attacking the army post to steal weapons and give them to the slaves

They feared the federal gov’t would grow even stronger, threatening their states rights, and that Lincoln would try to end slavery. Why? They knew Lincoln was agains slavery

What happened at Ft. Sumpter?
The confederate gov’t wanted control over the fort, but Lincoln would not surrender it. Consequently, the confederates attacked the fort. The us soldiers surrendered
