What is Sectionalism?
People begin to identify with one area over another. People preferred their own section.
What was an abolitionist?
Someone who wants to destroy slavery.
What was the Missouri Compromise?
A compromise when one state was added as a slave state (Missouri), and one free (Maine).
What was the Compromise of 1850?
California was added as a free state, slave trade was banned in Washington but a new fugitive slave law was added. Popular sovereignty was added to decide on issue of slavery.
Who wrote The Kansas-Nebraska act and why?
The act added Kansas and Nebraska saying that their slave laws would be settled by their own people. The act was created by Andrew Butler and Steven Douglas.
Who was Steven Douglas? What did he create?
Stephen was an Illinois senator who created the Kansas-Nebraska act.
What is popular sovereignty?
It is a vote by the people for their state.
Who wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin and what did it do?
It was wrote by Harriet Beecher Stowe and it further divived the north and south.
How did Kansas earn the nickname ‘Bleeding Kansas’?
The nickname was earned over a war between pro-slavery and anti-slavery.
What were the ‘Bogus Elections’?
The Bogus Elections were elections originally just for Kansas citizens, but Missourians illegally voted in the polls.
Who was David Rice Atchison?
He encouraged the Missourians to vote in Kansas during the Bogus Elections.
Who were the Border Ruffians?
The Missourians that voted during the Bogus Elections.
What was the Wakarusa War?
The war against Kansas being a pro-slave or anti-slave state.
Who was Dred Scott and what did he cause?
Dred Scott was a slave that sued for his freedom. He caused the supreme court to say that it is illegal to ban slavery, even in the North.
Who led the raid on Harper’s Ferry? What was the goal? The outcome?
John Brown led the raid. The goal was to collect weapons for the slaves to rebel with. John Brown was caught, however, and sentenced to be hanged.
What does it mean to secede?
To break off from your country.
What happened at Fort Sumner in South Carolina? Why is that significant?
The Fort was attacked but they kept the pro-slavery men out. A few days later the Fort surrendered without a loss of life.
