causes of river flooding Flashcards
rock and soil type
impermeable rocks and soils do not allow rain to soak through them
very wet soil
if rain has been falling for some time, the soil may become full of water. Any further rain unable to soak in will stay on top of the surface
very dry soil
soil that is baked in the sun becomes dry and forms crust which makes it difficult for rain to seep in
steep slopes
rain falling down steep slopes runs quickly down the hill leaving no time to to seep into the soil so most of it stays on the surface
deforestation
many of the worlds forests are being cleared for developments and some countries have recorded more serious floods ever since the clearing began
urbanisation
rain falling on concrete and tarmac is unable to soak so stays on the surface. gutters and drains then carry the water quickly and directly to the river. larger towns are most at risk.
