Causes Of Global Underdevelopment Flashcards
Political factors - KU
49% of angolas population in poverty
Isobel dos Santos (daughter of the former leader who ruled for almost 40 years) invested public money in her own projects and companies she owned making herself millions
38% Senegals population in poverty and the gov spent $27 mil on the monument to the African renaissance
Lack of skills and knowledge means officials don’t have the right priorities
Political factors - analysis
Less to spend on public services leading to the population having poor education and health which leads to the country not developing because the people can only go into low-skill jobs which do not boost the economy
This means that governments are irresponsible with their money leading to the underdevelopment of public services which harms the country’s development as future governments are also likely to be Incompetent due to lack of education
Social factors - KU
HIV- preventable but life long and life limiting for many
Over 2 3rds of the cases in Africa (disproportionately affected because of poor healthcare)
Only 53% of young people complete secondary school (29% in SUBSA) and only 50% of secondary teachers in SUBSA are qualified
Social factors - Analysis
Hiv wipes out many key workers leading to poorly manned and poorly developed public services.
Also forces children to look after siblings if parents are dead leading to them missing out on education and not developing skills to go into a well paid and necessary profession
Lack of education leads to an unskilled workforce which forces country to rely on primary industry jobs like agriculture which are low paying limiting development as less tax leads to less developed public services leads to more unskilled workforce
Economic factors - KU
In 2022 18 mil new poor emerged in Africa according to a un report and Africa had more than half the highest proportion of poor at 54.8%
Countries with high poverty levels aren’t able to introduce services to tackle poverty
Rules for trade set by wealthy countries
Cotton from Mali costs $50 a tonne while cotton from the US costs $100 a tonne but a $60 tax is added to the Mali cotton if sold in the US so the US can compete
These restrictions cause goods from poorer countries which are cheap to make are a lot more expensive
Economic factors - analysis
This leads to more poverty as there is nothing the government can do to help people and with poverty rates increasing there is even less money to invest in public services leading to more poverty
Businesses in Africa are unable to make more because of these trade barriers due to the unequal share in profits which leads to less money to invest in public services
