Causes of Crime Flashcards
How can poverty cause crime?
People who are struggling financially may turn to stealing in order to provide for their family. They may also be living in an area with no opportunities or activities, leading to boredom. Furthermore, people in poverty may be angry about their circumstances, and so turn to crime to release this anger.
How might someone’s environment cause crime?
The people you grow up around can influence your decisions in life. Social Learning Theory states that our behaviour is learned from those around us, including family and friends. If you grow up in an environment where crime is prominent, it is likely that you also will learn to commit crime. BUT can someone inherit these qualities?
How would a Utilitarian respond to crime caused by addiction?
Utilitarians’ first goal is to ensure society’s overall happiness and the only way to achieve this is to avoid drugs being an option in people’s lives in the first place through a mixture of law enforcement, social outreach programmes and education within schools.
How would a non-religious person respond to crime caused by boredom?
- invest in more police on the streets.
- Invest in more social workers and youth workers to prevent crime in the first place.
What is the nature argument?
nature is the idea that some people are ‘born’ criminals and have a gene that makes them more likely to commit crime.
What is the nurture argument?
Many scientists have explored the idea of Nurture as a cause for the way some
people are drawn to a life of crime. Nurture is defined as caring for and
protecting (someone or something) while they are growing e.g. your parents or
carers
However, the manner in which some people are brought up can affect their Whole life.
How would a utilitarian respond to crimes committed due to someone’s environment?
A Utilitarian would approve that by reducing the issues that
families face then less crimes would be committed and this would
benefit the majority of people.
