Causes Of Anaemia Flashcards
What is macrocytic anaemia?
Low haemoglobin concentration (<115g/L in women) with a high mean cell volume (normal = 76-96 femtolitres)
What is normocytic anaemia?
Low haemoglobin concentration (<115g/L for women) with normal mean cell volume (76-96 femtolitres)
What is microcytic anaemia?
Low haemoglobin concentration with a low mean cell volume (normal = 76-96 femtolitres)
What is mean cell volume?
Measurement of the average volume of a red blood cell (also known as mean corpuscular volume)
List 7 causes of normocytic anaemia
1) acute blood loss
2) anaemia of chronic disease
3) bone marrow failure
4) renal failure
5) hypothyroidism
6) haemolysis
7) pregnancy
List 3 causes of microcytic anaemia
1) iron deficiency anaemia
2) thalassaemia
3) sideroblastic anaemia
List 8 causes of macrocytic anaemia
1) B12 or folate deficiency
2) alcohol excess or liver disease
3) reticulocytosis
4) cytotoxics (e.g. hydroxycarbamide)
5) myelodysplastic syndromes
6) marrow infiltration
7) hypothyroidism
8) anti-folate drugs (e.g. phenytoin)
