Cause of Tumors Exam 3 Flashcards
Cause of giant cell tumor
neoplasm that originates from nonbone forming supportive CT of the marrow
Cause of solitary osteochondrosarcoma
bony exostosis on the external surface of a bone and usually lined by a hyaline cartilage cap
Cause of Hereditary multiple exostosis
(HME)
“diaphyseal achalasia”
an inherited autosomal dominant condition which is characterized by multiple osteochondromas often causing metaphseal overgrowth
Cause of Simple/solitary/unicameral bone cyst
a non-neoplastic fluid filled cystic cavity lined with fibrous tissue
Cause of Aneurysmal bone cyst
non-neoplastic expansile lesion containing thin-walled blood-filled cystic cavities
Cause of osteoblastoma
a rare benign tumor with unlimited growth potential
Cause of Osteoid osteoma
benign skeletal neoplasm composed of osteoid and woven bone less than 1.5 cm in diameter
Cause of Osteoma
benign tumor arising in membranous bone
Cause of Enchondroma
a benign cartilaginous growth in the medullary cavity of bones preformed in cartilage
Cause of Enchondromatosis/Ollier’s
nonhereditary failure of cartilage ossification
Cause of Hemangiomas
solitary vascular neoplasm which is slow growing and composed of newly formed capillary, cavernous*, or venous BV
Cause of Chondroblastoma
rare benign bone tumor
Cause of Paget’s Disease
etiology is thought to be viral, old theories were inflammatory disease, metabolic, endocrine, neoplastic, vascular, autoimmune
-bone undergoes increased resorption followed by increased bone formation. The newly formed bone has a disorganized trabecular patter leading to bone softtening
Stages of Page’ts Disease
- stage 1: osteolytic/destructive
- stage 2: mixed/combined
- stage 3: sclerotic/ivory
- stage 4: malignant degeneration .9-2%
Cause of Fibrous Dysplasia
a benign fibro-osseous developmental anomaly of the mesenchymal precursor of bone, manifested as a defect in osteoblastic differentiation and maturation
Types of Fibrous Dysplasia
- monostotic form (70-80%) affects ribs, proximal femur, and craniofacial bones
- polosytotic form (20-30%) unilateral and asymmetric long bone involvement: femur> tibia>pelvic> feet> ribs, skull & facial bones> upper ext & spine
Cause of Fibrosarcoma
a primary malignant bone tumor that produces varying amounts of collagen
Cause of Chordoma
a rare primary malignant bone tumor which arises from vestigial remnants of the notochord
Cause of Multiple Myeloma
malignant proliferation of plasma cells, which infiltrate the BM
Cause of Solitary Plasmocytoma
localized form of plasma cell proliferation
Cause of Osteosarcoma
primary malignant tumor of undifferentiated CT which forms neoplatic osteoid
2nd MC primary malignant bone tumor overall
Osteosarcoma
MC primary malignant bone tumor in children and young adults
Osteosarcoma
Chondrosarcoma
primary malignant tumor of chondrogenic origin
-comprises about 10% of all primary malignant bone tumors
