Define Poll:
An animal without horns.
Define Vealer:
A calf reared on its mother for the purpose of slaughter at 8-12 months.
Define Steer:
A male castrated when young.
Define Calf:
A young animal of either sex up to 10 months.
Define Culling:
Removing an animal from a herd because of age, disease, physical deformity or lack of value as a breeding animal.
Define Gestation:
From conception to birth, in cattle, this is 9 months.
Define Heifer:
A female older than a calf, from 6 months until it has had a calf itself.
Describe the cattle distribution in Australia:
Present on the coast from the top od WA to Adelaide. Concentrated from the middle of the coast of QLD to VIC. Some in Perth and quite a bit in TAS.
Why is tattooing done and where is it done?
Tattooing is done in the ear and is done to identify cattle.
What is drenching and why is it done?
Feeding cattle a liquid which kills internal parasites.
What is dipping/backlining and why is it done?
It is done by dipping or pouring insecticide over the cattle’s back to prevent external parasites.
What is ear-tagging and why is it done?
It is punching a tag into the cattle’s ear and is done for identification purposes.
What is castration and why is it done?
Castration is the removal of male reproductive organs and is done to prevent unplanned mating and pregnancy. It also creates a more docile animal which is good for ease of handling.
What is vaccination and why is it done?
The injection of a liquid to prevent a variety of diseases.
