The important of the state cult increased as Rome went through the great crisis of the Germanic invasions.
What were the soldier emperors trying to do?
They were desperately trying to unite the empire against the external threat.
How was one way of them trying to unite the empire?
Through worship of the Roman gods, including Caesar
What was the real reason Christians were sacrificed?
Not sacrificed to the vanity and hubris of the emperors. Refusal to honor the gods was seen as an act of treachery, weakening the empire at the hour of its greatest need
