  • Protestant churches are an anti-Catholic militia.

21
Q

What are the four church structures?

A
  • The church’s hierarchy is headed by the Bishop of Rome, known as the Pope, who is the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church.
  • Directly serving the pope is the Roman Curia, the central governing body that administers the day-to-day business of the Catholic Church
  • The position of Cardinal is a rank of honor bestowed by popes on certain clergy, such as leaders within the Roman Curia, bishops serving in major cities and distinguished theologians. For advice and assistance in governing, the pope may turn to the College of Cardinals.
  • Following the death or resignation of a pope, members of the College of Cardinals who are under the age of 80 years old meet in a papal conclave to elect a successor. Although the conclave may elect any male Catholic Pope, since 1389 only Cardinals have been elected.
22
Q

What are the four points under the Bishop of Rome, or the Pope.

A
  • Selling indulgences (I.e. “Kill your wife and remarry; it will cost you such and such amount.)
  • Peter’s Pence was a tax that every country would have to pay to the Catholic Church. This tax was dependent on the population.
  • people didn’t want to pay the tax. Martin Luther tells the people the Catholic Church is wrong, therefore they do not need to pay the tax.
  • Landowners/nobles jump at this opportunity to evade “Peter’s Pence.” It’s actually cheaper to build a Protestant Church than to pay the tax.
23
Q

What is the purpose of the Papal Conclave?

A

It was a way to decide the next pope. They put several candidates in a closed room, and they fought each other to the death, so that full-scale war would not break out. There has been more than one Pope at times.

29
