Catholic Social Teaching Flashcards
every human is made in God’s likeness, life is valued from conception to death, the weakest are especially worthy of our protection, freedom to become what God wants us to be, creating opportunities for everyone to have a full life, individual and global level, how can you make a difference, all principles come back to this one
ex: support and volunteer in a program that assists pregnant women
Life and Dignity of the Human Person
we are called to be social beings, families are central to the life of society, we are made to be in a community, engage, don’t be a bystander, subsidiarity - allowing the different levels of society to do the job for which they were made, neighbors need to help one another, we are all made social beings
ex: attend municipal council meetings, township meetings, or neighborhood meetings
Call to Family, Community, and Participation
human rights come out of human dignity, made in image and likeness of God, right for decent livelihood, but we have to contribute to society and the common good, basic rights - life, food, shelter, healthcare, clothing, sophisticated rights - participation in society, search for God (freedom of religion), we are called to help people in need, we have to fight for our human rights, we have people to look after us and people we need to look after, work is used to build up a society and help others in need
ex: vote in every election, exercising your responsibility for participation in decisions that affect the common good
Rights and Responsibilities
God has a preference for the poor, he has a special love for those in need, we should encounter them as equals not from a perspective of superiority, we should be touched by the poverty in the world, look systemically and wonder why they are in that situation, how can we address the larger issues?, we should care for the poor and put them first, caring for the poor doesn’t have to be hard
ex: volunteer or donate resources to an agency that supports and empowers the poor
Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
work is God’s gift to us, we are able to use God’s gifts he’s given us to make the world a better place, work exists for people, people don’t exist for work, just wages, safe working conditions, ability for the worker to participate in the fruits of his/her labor, time for leisure and rest, sick leave, healthcare, adequate retirement support, to choose to form unions, workers have responsibilities like providing a fair day’s work for a fair day’s wage, manager and employers need to uphold the rights of workers, work has dignity, think about the workers who affect your life, purchasing decisions are moral decisions
ex: advocate and/or provide for just wages and benefits
Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
based on belief that everything was created by God, we are all connected in God’s creation, commitment for the welfare of the other, we are one human family, let someone know you truly care about them, we do it with them and grow together, we are connected to Christ and his mission of _____, always in relationship with God, myself, and others, especially the poor, help solve the root of problems, we need clear priorities, awareness will lead us to action
ex: seek out opportunities to know people of other races, cultures, and religions
Solidarity
it’s up to us to care for and respect God’s gift of creation, caring for the environment, we care for the bounty of the Lord, given to all of us to enjoy and sustain our needs, environment = the support system of human life, we have to respect it if we want it to provide for us, when creation suffers, it hurts the poor the most, care for creation translates to the care for our brothers and sisters, reciprocal relationship between man and his environment
