Categorical Imperatives Flashcards
First Formulation of the Categorical Imperative
Act only in accordance with that maxim through which you can, at the same time, will that it becomes a universal law
maxim phrasing || I would 1 in 2 in order to realise or produce 3
1) ACTION
2) CIRCUMSTANCE
3) PURPOSE
Maxim
When we make choices; intentions that guide us in choosing our actions
Maxim phrasing
I will [ACTION] in [CIRCUMSTANCE] in order to realize or produce [PURPOSE]
Imperative
A command addressed to agents who could follow it but might not - “ought to”
Categorical Imperative
An imperative which applies to all agents regardless of their specific ends/goals
Maxim leads to contradiction in conception
Perfect duties occur
Maxim leads to contradiction in the will
Imperfect duties occur
Perfect duties according to Kant
Strict or rigorous (inflexible); no exceptions
e.g. never ok to commit suicide, never ok to make a lying promise
Imperfect duties according to Kant
Laxer duties; accept exceptions - duties but you have some choice about how to fulfill them
e.g. helping people in need - don’t have to give all money to charity, just some
Second formulation of the Categorical Imperative
we should not use people as objects, but instead recognize the inherent dignity and value that we all have (“Act in such a way that you always treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never simply as a means, but always at the same time as an end.”)
Inherent
Appreciate for what it is, and not for what it enables us to do e.g. companionship, enjoyment of music
First and Second formulations of Categorical Imperatives
1) Formula of the Law of Nature
2) Formula of the End in Itself
