What does baptism do/give?
It works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare.
What is Baptism?
Baptism is not just plain water, but it is the water included in God’s command and combined with God’s word.
Which is that the word of God in relation to baptism?
As Christ says in the last chapter of Matthew,
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”
Therefore it is the Triune name.
How can water do such great things?
Its not simply water, but the word of God in and with the water does these things, along with the faith which trusts this word of God in the water. Without the word of God it is plain water. But with the word of God, it is a baptism, a life-giving water, rich in Grace and a washing of the new birth in the Holy Spirit.
What does baptizing in water indicate? Scripture reference?
It indicates the “old Adam” in us should by daily remorse and repentance be drowned and die with our evil desires. And that a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.
What is confession?
It has two parts: we confess our sins and second that we receive absolution, that is, forgiveness from the pastor himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven.
What sins do we confess?
All sins, even those we are not aware of. In confession, we should confess the sins we know within our hearts.
What is the office of keys?
A special authority that Christ has given his church on earth to forgive sins of repentant sinners, but to withhold repentance from unrepentant sinners.
What passage talks about the office of the keys?
John 20:22-23
“Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
What is the sacrament of the altar?
It is the true body and blood of Christ, under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ himself for us Christians to partake of.
Where in scripture does Christ institute the Sacrament of the altar?
Luke 22
Who is worthy to partake of the sacrament of the altar?
One who has faith in the words Christ spoke regarding what he said about it. Faith in that, would imply the person being a Christian, and without the belief or faith, one can not partake.
Blessing for a meal
Lord God, heavenly Father, bless us and these Your gifts which we receive from Your bountiful goodness, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
What does the congregation owe their pastor?
Hebrews 13:17
17 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.
How should a Christian treat the government?
Romans 13:1
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
