Catalyst Flashcards
1
Q
What does adding a catalyst do the rate of a reaction?
A
A catalyst can increase the rate of reaction. Using a catalyst correctly orientates molecules for reaction and it weakens existing bonds.
2
Q
Define catalyst.
A
A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of the reaction but remains unchanged at the end of the reaction.
3
Q
How does a catalyst increase the rate of a reaction? (2)
A
- Using a catalyst correctly orientates molecules for reaction and it weakens existing bonds.
- The function of a catalyst is to provide an alternative path for the reaction, which has a lower activation energy. A lower activation energy means that a greater proportion of particles will have sufficient energy to react.
