CAT II & CAT III Flashcards
Can CAT II be landed manually?
No must be Autoland
What do you set the minima to?
Radio Altimeter to the DH.
What do you conduct a MAP for from commencing final approach to DH?
- NO AUTOLND is displayed on AFDS
- Malfunction in Airborne Equipment req’d for CAT II approach
- Failure occurs in GND facility (AUTOPILOT alert and master caution light will activate) On PFD LOC & GS modes will turn fail indication and deviation pointers will disappear.
When to conduct MAP at Approach Ban?
- RVR is less than the company minima applied to the Captain
- Any RVR on RWY is less then 200m CAT II
- Any RVR on RWY is less then 50m CAT III
When to conduct MAP at DH?
- LOC deviation exceeds 1/3 Dot (2/3 Dot on expanded scale) or
GS exceeds 1 Dot - If Airplane is not in a position where a continuous desent to to the intended RWY can be made at an appropriate ROD using normal manoeuvres.
- Visual reference not established
ALS cross bar, red terminating barettes or red side row barettes and segment of at least 3
RL or CL or
TDZ
When must a MAP be made below DH?
Any failure occurs
Approach can be continued if Capt decides the auto LDG could be accomplished safely
When RVR is less then 1200m what restrictions apply?
- RWY length needs to be 115% or longer than LDG field length (DRY)
(The LDG weight is at or lower than limit WT of WET)
OEI LDG weight is at or lower than the OEI field limit weight for CAT II & III - Max Crosswind is 10 kt used for the decision to land OEI
- Max crosswind 15kt 2 ENG
CAT II Minima?
200-100ft
300m RVR
Visual references?
One of- Cross Bar, RTHL, Barrettes of TDZ
And one of EITHER-
1- Segment of at least 3 consecutive lights of ALS. (Cross bar, red terminating barrettes or red side row barrettes is also visible)
2- RL or CL
3- TDZ
AFDS Annunciation?
Either LAND2 or LAND3 is displayed
NO AUTOLND is not displayed at or ABV 1500ft RA
PFD?
2 systems: Different ILS and Radio altitude sources are provided for PF and PM sides.
Means EICAS messages:
- SGL SOURCE APPROACH
- SGL SOURCE RAD ALT
are not shown on AFDS.

2 systems
RADIO Minimums?
2 systems
A/P DISC warning?
1 system
Windshield wiper?
2 systems
Forward Window Heat?
2 systems
- EICAS msg WINDOW HEAT L(R) FWD must not be shown.
- Not required when icing condition is not anticipated (20’c TAT is icing conditions in the air)
Marker Receiver?
1 system (Not required when approach does not require marker beacon)
Windshield wiper?
2 systems
Forward window heat?
2 systems- except when icing conditions are not anticipated.
Ground Facilities Required?
- LOC and GS
- Marker- OM: (Except when substitution eg; DME fix, Radar fix etc)
- Lighting- ALS, RL, RTHL and RENL, TDZ, CL
- RVR- Touchdown, Midpoint or Stop End however Stop End shall be in operation in U.S
What are the different procedures when conducting a CAT II approach?
- Set DH to RA
- Call out all FMA’s (FLARE, ROLLOUT, IDLE)
NO AUTOLAND

AUTOBRAKES
CAT II - Continue
If message, switch off and continue MAN braking
CAT III - 1 system req so GA
ANTISKID
CAT II - Continue
- Autobrake off
CAT III - EICAS MSG ANTISKID must not be shown if is then G/A
AUTOTHROTTLE

AUTOPILOT

- Indicates ground facility fail. LOC and/or GS will have a line through and deviation pointers gone
Deviation Callout?
Localizer:
- More than 1/2 dot (1 dot on expanded scale)
- More than 1/3 dot (2/3 dot on expanded scale) after “APPROACHING MINIMUM” is called
Glideslope:
- More than 1 dot
Explain RWY end lights?
- 900m to go RWY centreline lights go red and white
- 600m to go RWY edge lights go orange
- 300m to go RWY centreline lights go red
RWY centreline light spacing CAT II? CAT III?
CAT II - 15m
CAT III - 7.5m or 15m
Max crosswind and when to confirm?
RVR less then 1200m = 15kt (2ENG)
10kt (OEI)
- Must be with value at time of LDG clearance
- if it exceeds 10kts at LDG clearance, can continue to 500ft and check again.
- If LDG clearance issued BLW 500ftAFE then wind should be checked at 500ft.
What happens at 200ft?
NO AUTOLAND and
LAND 2 annunciation inhibited
FLARE
40-60ft
IDLE
25-50ft
ROLLOUT
Weight on wheels
1500ft
LAND 2 or LAND 3 annunciates
How many CL lights do you need to have to know you have the required RVR? CAT II?
20
Lights for CAT II Runway are spaced 15m apart so 15 x 20 is 300m
What to do if wind is reported greater than 10kt at start of approach?
- Can continue till 500ft and then confirm.
- Wind has nothing to do with approach ban (only vis)
Can you continue approach if past the Approach ban point and the RVR is reported below minima? (50m) on CAT III
Yes you can as you are past the approach ban point. If at the AH you deem the aircraft is in a safe position to land using normal manoeuvres. There is no requirement for RVR on taxi but perhaps will need to request a follow me car if the visibility is too low.
