Palisade- tall wooden fence

In strategic locations such as at river crossings or mountain passes
Also in large settlements

To act as a base for Lords- place to launch attacks and seek refuge
To intimidate Saxons- symbol of Norman power
To control Saxons rather than defend them- prevent rebellions
