Casey et al- Neural correlates of delay of gratification Flashcards
Ventral striatum
Evident behaviour: desires and emotions and if over active can lead to delay of gratification/impulsivity
Inferior frontal gyrus
Evident behaviour: cognitive control, if over active, one can become highly contrlled
Nature/nurture
Nature- biologically predisposed to gratification delaying trait, hence will remain same overtime
Nurture- children can be taught to suppress alluring stimuli
Free will/deterministic
Deterministic- brain differences mean that some are good and some are vulnerable to gratification
Reductionism/holism
Reductionist- reduce behaviour down to one factor. In this case resisting to temptation is reduced to brain activity while it may have to do with other factors such as cognitive factors, mental thought processes or upbringing, developmental
Situational/individual differences
ID- There are differences in individuals’ ability to resist temptation during alluring social cues. in the ways they respond to “hot” cues and temptation
