used for person/thing that is doing the action. Who/what is doing the something? e.g Der Mann schlaft
Dative endings

Dative when to use
used to show the indirect object of a verb. An indirect object is a person/thing the action is intended to benefit or harm. e.g Ich gab der Frau einen Apfel - Who did I give an apple to?
Genitive endings
Masc - des
Fem - der

Genitive when to use
used to show that something belongs to someone. e.g Das Auto des Mannes ist Schwarz - Whose car is black?
