Case Study: Salford Quays Flashcards
Where are the quays?
They are located in the City of Salford, a borough of Greater Manchester, to the West of the city centre. The quays are 3km WSW of the centre, lying on the Manchester Ship Canal, joined to the River Irwell to the NE and the Mersey to the West.
What special locations lie in and around the quays?
Media City UK The Lowry Gallery and Outlet Mall The Imperial War Museum North Old Trafford Football grounds Trafford Park (1st planned industrial estate globally)
Why was the ship canal built?
To allow freight ships to carry cotton from India straight to the ginning factories, as opposed to transporting them from Liverpool by land.
Why did de-industrialisation occur in Manchester?
Globalisation and industialisation in India meant that cotton industries were developing in areas where farm to factory costs were lower and labour costs were lower. This meant that more cotton was made in India and so Manchester’s industries had both fewer raw materials and greater competition, meaning expenses overtook profits and the factories were forced to close.
