How is the land use in shanghai divided?
the main CBD is nucleated along the huangpu river, concentrated with high density of residential and public buildings. Agricultural and green spaces occupy the most area outside of the suburban ring / most of the city. The river flows throughout the entire city, with its main stream close to the CBD.

- the particle pollution in Shanghai is 9x higher than the recommended exposure
- along the coast the pollution is less, within the west it is worse
- the whole city is submerged in hazardous air levels
- in 2020, air pollution in Shanghai is responsible for 27,000 premature deaths
Describe the issue with traffic congestion in Shanghai in more detail.
- Scholars predicted that Shanghai could hold 16 million people max, now it has almost doubled
- overpopulated areas and lack of roads
- in one year there are 265,000 road accidents and 73,000 deaths due to congestion
- congestion peaks in the mornings and around 5-6 pm
Slum clearance in Shanghai
During urbanization, slums were removed from the outskirts of the city. This chased thousand of people out of their homes, they couldn’t fight back because they had no legal documents to prove their residency. The government provided compensation for the residents to stay in, however they were far to expensive for them.
