-Small rural village until railway 1832-1847.
-Barton and Eastley combined Charlotte Yonge to Eastleigh.
-1890 lSWR moved manufacturing from London to Eastleigh bringing workers
1900 - 1950 expansion of industry cable manufacturing Pirelli.
1950s-2000s de-industrialisation phase, town diversifies into office employment.
Modern economy of Eastleigh contributes to economy of Solent and Hampshire.

Physical Geography

A

Wide floodplain of river Itchen- flat relief allowed expansion of town to agriculture and common land use .
Land rises to over 60m north of the town.
Soil is mostly Brickearth deposits. Also Alluvium (clay silt and sand).
Still contains wetland habitats for otters, water vole, salmon and invertebrates.

A

Mostly residential with housebuilding increasing.
Industrial focused in sites/parks around the town
Local agriculture includes dairy farming, chicken farming and fisheries.

Built environment- History to Now (streets, housing etc)

A

1881- 3 streets High street, Market street and Southampton Road.
1880s- Chamberlayne and Nichols designed new town based on terraced housing arranged in grid iron pattern.
1920s- First council houses built.
2018- Identification for 14,500 new homes to be built before 2036. 1100 new homes Stoneham Park
