Case Study- Amazon Rainforest Flashcards
Soil erosion
Mineral content decreases as roots don’t hold soil together , soil can’t be used
(Deforestation) climate change
Less trees = increase CO2 as not being used in photosynthesis
Commercial farming
Farming for a profit. Usually farming on large scale using few workers and lots of machinery
Cattle destroy land
Subsistence farming ( not really in the Amazon )
Self sufficient. Producing crops and rearing animals just for the farmers own use.
Little tech or machinery but needs a lot of manpower/ labour intensive
Road building
Increase deforestation to make way for the roads.
But used for transport
Logging
The process of cutting down trees for fuel , timber and money
Mineral extraction
Gold does equal Money
Water can be polluted from surface run off, this can pollute nearby towns water supply’s
Threaten nearby towns
Energy developments
Hydroelectric power encourages dams being built but require large areas of land
