What is mania?
The manic stage of bipolar disorder where patient has a period of elevated extreme, changes in moods or emotions, energy levels or activity
What are the symptoms of mania?
Elevated moods
full of energy
taking very quickly
being easily distracted
racing thoughts
rapid speech
impulsive risky behaviour
decreased need for sleep
delusions and hallucinations
not eating
How long should symptoms be present for in order for mania to be diagnosed?
at least a week
What are extrapyramidal side effects and what are they?
Occurs when taking antipsychotic medication
akathisia- Feeling restless, e.g tapping fingers
dystonia- involuntarily contraction of muscles
Parkinsonism- tremors, difficulty finishing thoughts or speech
tardive dyskinesia- focal movement that happens involuntarily
what are the symptoms of sepsis?
shivering
shortness of breath
disorientation
sweaty skin
increased heart rate
extreme pain
What does the T stand for in TIME?
Temperature higher or lower than normal
What does the I stand for in TIME?
infection: may have signs ans symtoms of infection
What does the M in TIME stand for?
Mental decline: confusion, sleepy difficult to rouse, disorientation
What does the E stand for in TIME?
Extremly ill: severe pain, discomfort, shortness of breath
a patient has been admitted to hospital. They are displaying signs of sepsis. What should we do? and what should be done before treatment?
- Broad spectrum antibiotic should be given such as Tazocin
- At the maximum recommended dose
- Ideally within the hour (no delay)
before treatment:
- antimicrobial culture should be taken
- Antibiotic treatment should be adjusted depending on what bacteria are present in the culture
