Case Study #1 Flashcards
What is Nutrition?
The study of nutrients and other biologically active compounds in foods and in the body; sometimes also the study of human behaviours related to food
What are Nutrients?
components of food that are indispensable to the body’s functioning; they provide energy, serve as building material, help maintain or repair body parts, and support growth
What is a Diet?
Food and beverages a person usually eats and drinks
What is Malnutrition?
any condition caused by excess (overnutrition) or deficient (undernutrition) food energy or nutrient intake by an imbalance of nutrients
What are chronic diseases?
long-duration degenerative diseases characterized by deterioration of body organs; examples include heart disease, cancer, and diabetes
How does your choice of diet influences long term health?
Within the range set by genetic inheritance; nutrition has little influence on some disease, but strongly affects others
What is a metabolism?
all of the collective chemical reactions in the body
What are the two types of metabolism?
Catabolism – breakdown of chemical compounds
Anabolism – build-up of chemical compounds
What is ATP?
ATP is the only compound that the body is able to use for numerous energy-driven processes at rest and during exercise
Energy is stored in the chemical bond between 2nd and 3rd phosphate groups
What are the Three Energy Systems?
ATP-PCr system
Glycolytic system – “Glycolysis”
Oxidative system – “Oxidative Metabolism”
What is the ATP-PCr system ?
Occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell
Fastest rate of ATP production
Shortest duration at which ATP can be produced
What is the Glycolytic system – “Glycolysis”?
Occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell
Moderate rate and duration of ATP production
What is the Oxidative system – “Oxidative Metabolism”?
Occurs in the mitochondria of the cell (“powerhouse” of the cell)
Slowest rate of ATP production
Longest duration at which ATP can be produced
Included Krebs cycle and electron transport chain
What does the contribution of each system primarily dependent on?
Intensity of the activity
Duration of the activity
What is Wellness?
An active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward a more successful existence.
What are the 8 Dimensions of Wellness?
Emotional
Financial
Social
Spiritual
Occupational
Physical
Intellectual
Environmental
What is the emotional dimension of wellness?
coping effectively with life and creating satisfying relationships
What is the financial dimension of wellness?
satisfaction with current and future financial situations
What is the social dimension of wellness?
developing a sense of connection, belonging, and a well-developed support system
What is the spiritual dimension of wellness?
expanding our sense of purpose and meaning in life
What is the occupational dimension of wellness?
personal satisfaction and enrichment derived from one’s work
What is the physical dimension of wellness?
recognizing the need for physical activity, diet, sleep, and nutrition
What is the intellectual dimension of wellness?
recognizing creative abilities and finding ways to expand knowledge and skills
What is the environmental dimension of wellness?
good health by occupying pleasant, stimulating environments that support well being
