Case Studies Flashcards
Describe the case study of KF
He had a motorcycle accident that damaged his STM. He had poor STM ability for auditory information but could still process visual information normally, suggesting his Phonological Loop was damaged but his VSS was intact.
Describe the case study of Clive Wearing
A virus from a coldsore shot to his brain, damaging his LTM. He was unable to recall and form new episodic memories, but his procedural memory appeared to be intact, as he could still play the piano.
Describe the case study of HM
He underwent brain surgery and had his hippocampus removed. He was unable to form new episodic memories, but could still learn (eg. the mirror star test), suggesting his procedural memory was still intact.
What is a criticism of the use of case studies as supporting evidence?
They aren’t generalisable, especially in instances such as memory, when it is unclear as to whether the individuals had other cognitive impairments
