Pennsylvania v. Mimms
Officers are authorized to order a driver and/or passengers out of the vehicle during a car stop.
Tennessee v. Garner
Deadly force may be used to prevent the escape of a fleeing suspect who poses imminent threat of serious bodily harm to the officers or others.
Chimel v. California
Search incident to arrest is authorized only in the area immediately accessible to the arrestee at the time of arrest. The search must be for weapons or for evidence that could be destroyed before being collected.
Illinois v. Wardlow
Unprovoked flight alone is not cause for a terry stop, however flight or evasive behavior in combination with additional factors that generate reasonable suspicion of criminal activity can warrant a stop.
