case formulation Flashcards
What is the purpose of case formulation?
(Kuyken 2006) provide a set of potential explanations of the individuals behaviour based of theorys on why the person had their problem at this time
when should it be used?
(Drake + ward 2003)
- complex problem + treatment unclear
-unusual crime
-treatments have failed (redivism)
-offender not benefiting from current treatment
5 rules of formulation?
1) individualised
2) testable
3) diachionic (past to future)
4)narrative
5)amplitative
phase 1: offence analysis
-will draw conclusions from similar crimes
-crimeogenic factors (education, employment, attitude..)
-internal motivations (feelings)
-external motivations (enviroment)
Phase 2: risk assessments + perspectives
is it cognitive, behavioural or psychodynamic?
-scenario planning
-hypothesis on what may happen + worst case scenario
Phase 3: application of treatment
-end goal to establish intervention for offender
-HCPC guidelines help to create formulation

STRENGTHS
Hollistic view of offender individuallised. goes beyond diagnosis, as its a personal plan tailored to suit individuals needs. The 5 rules icl, individualised, testable, diahonic, narrative and ampliative.
flexible= more likley to be reassesed and changed for a result of most effective treatment to reduce redivism.
WEAKNESSES
primaraly based of self report data gathered from clinical interviews
risk of simplifying complex data into diagrams
