CAS/DVD Flashcards
CAS/DVD interventions:
PROMPT
ReST
Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC)
Nuffield (NDP3)
Phonological Awareness Procedure (PAP)
What is CAS/DVD?
Motor planning errors resulting in difficulty in making and co-ordinating the precise movements required for the production of clear speech
What are the features of CAS/DVD?
Articulatory struggle and groping
Limited speech sound system
Non consistency of speech sounds
Vowel AND consonant errors
Inconsistent stress and tonality
Inconsistent nasality
Longer words are worse
Slow progress
Diadochokinetic motor skill difficulties (DDK)
Imitation makes speech worse than spontaneous realisations
What do diadochokinetic skills mean?
The ability to perform repetition of syllables at a maximum rate of production
Speech motor skills rather than oral motor skills
What is the difference between CAS/DVD and Inconsistency Disorder
CAS - motor problems
No vowel problems in Inconsistency Disorder
No suprasegmental/prosody problems in ID
Imitation over spontaneous realisations works better for ID
What are the differences between CAS and Phonological Disorder?
PD shows progress
PD - no vowels problems
PD - No speech sound sequencing problems
PD - no suprasegmental/prosody problems
PD - no oro-motor problems
PD - Imitation >spontaneous realisations
What is the prevalence of DVD/CAS?
Boys: girls - 4:1
Rare - 0.03% children in the general population
SLT referrals - 3-4%
What is the aetiology of CAS/DVD?
Suggests neurological deficit but nothing shows on MRI/CT scans - technology may not be sensitive enough yet
What assessment is used with CAS/DVD?
DDK assessment
Nuffield
DEAP - Inconsistency and Oromotor assessments
Stackhouse and Wells
What are some intervention tips for CAS/DVD?
Work on word structure systematically e.g. CV CVC
Reorganise phonological system - one phoneme at a time
Repetitive and intensive
Establish core vocabulary and power words
Use AAC to facilitate communication
