What are the different types of thematic maps? - walking down to Labelle
1) Dot Maps (e.g., population density) - Joe’s & Matt w/ the laser projector
2) Proportional Symbol (2D & 3D) - Manhole cover @ end of driveway
3) Segmented Symbol - grade outside of Dr. Dobson’s house
4) Isolines (e.g., temperature, rainfall, etc.) - the Pellerin’s house
5) Chloropleths - The light next to Joe’s house on Labelle
6) Cartograms - the ghetto car house on the corner of Alexandra & Labelle
What are 3D proportional symbols typically used for?
Situations with a large range of values.
What are chloropleth maps?
Choropleth maps display divided geographical areas or regions that are coloured, shaded or patterned in relation to a data variable (e.g., constituency electoral map)
What are cartograms?
A cross between a diagram and a map; typ
What are the 3 different types of cartograms?
1) Topological
2) Value-by-area
3) Mental maps
Give an example of a topological cartogram.
Subway system in Toronto - shows connectivity but not necessarily accurately or to scale
Provide an example of a value-by-area cartogram.
Greenhouse gas emissions world map where the area of China, the US of A, and India are very exaggerated - depicts value by area.
Give an example of a mental cartogram.
Driving directions from my house to Walmart - a quick sketch with some landmarks that’s not to scale.
Why are maps oriented to the North?
The north star and magnetic North - before the use of these two navigational aids maps were oriented east.
