Cartilage Flashcards
What is cartilage?
avascular tissue with chondrocytes that produce and maintain the matrix
What is hyaline cartilage?
matrix containing proteoglycans, hyaluronic acid and type 2 collagen. Chondrocytes only. Perichondrium covers margin. Found at ends of long bones, nose, parts of ribcage.
What is elastic cartilage?
Matrix like hyaline but addition of many elastic fibres and elastic lamellae. Found in external ear, epiglottis.
What is fibrocartilage?
abundant type 1 collagen fibres in addition to the matrix of material of hyaline cartilage. Contains chondrocytes as well as fibroblasts. Strongest type, no perichondrium. Found in pubic symphysis, IV discs, SC joint.
What are synovial joints?
Movable joints in which the bone ends are covered by hyaline or fibrocartilage. The joints lies within synovial fluid and is bounded by articular capsule which is lined by a synovial membrane (macrophage and fibroblast like cells and reinforced with fibrous tissue and ligaments.
