Cartilage Flashcards
Describe the composition of cartilage in terms of its cells and extracellular components
Classify the 3 major types of cartilage and describe the structural differences between them
Hyaline- clear calm smooth
Elastic- elastic cartilage is stretchy but will return to original shape
Fibrocartliage- fibrous cartilage
alll have a matrix containing proteoglycan and hyaluronic acid.
all have chondocy
Relate the different anatomical distribution of the 3 major types of cartilage to their different functions
recognise the following in photomicrographs and discuss their anatomical locations and salient histological features in relation to their function:
o hyaline cartilage (e.g. in trachea)
o hyaline articular cartilage (e.g. on articulating ends of
bones)
o elastic cartilage (e.g. in epiglottis)
o fibrocartilage (e.g. in intervertebral disc)
