What are the developmental tasks?
- INDIVIDUATION: Forming an identity separate from that of their family of origin.
- INTIMATE RELATIONSHIPS: developing intimate relationships with peers outside the family to acquire the social and emotional support they need.
- COMMITMENT: making their first tentative commitment to a career or workplace goal.
Who plays an important role in the development of the adult at this stage?
The family of origin.
What must happen to the relationship between a parent and a child?
The relationship becomes less hierarchical as young adults accept more responsibility.
What is difficult for parents when child is going through developmental stage?
It is difficult for parents to let go and let their child take on a lot more responsibility.
What does the family life cycle theory emphasize about development?
That development involves adjustment in the family in response to change.
What must happen in order for the young adult to move onto the next stage?
In order to move on to the next stage the parent must let go and allow their child to become fully independent.
