Carrying out a titration Flashcards
What is titration?
Where a solution of known concentration is used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution.
Titration method using sodium hydroxide solution and sulfuric acid
Use a pipette to transfer 25cm^3 of sodium hydroxide solution into a conical flask.
Add 5 drops of inidicator (such as methyl orange)
Place conical flask on white tile to see colour change more clearly
Fill burette with sulfuric acid
Add sulfuric acid to alkali until solution is neutral. Once a colour change is seen, add acid drop by drop until solution is neutral. Make sure to swirl the solution to ensure proper mixing.
Real volume of acid added - make sure eye is level with surface of liquid - always read at the bottom of the “dip” (meniscus)
Repeat several times and take mean.
